WTO Director-General plans to step down before his term end

The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Roberto Azevedo intends to step down before his term ends in 2021. The news has been reported by Bloomberg citing four people familiar with the matter.

Roberto Azevedo, 62-year-old Brazilian, is the sixth head of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Roberto Azevedo is serving his second term as the Director-General in the organisation which started in September 2017 and is to end in 2021. His first term as the chief of the WTO started in September 2013.

Speculations have risen over the possible successor of Roberto Azevedo if he steps down. There is high probability that one of Azevedo’s four Deputy Directors-General could serve as interim caretaker until his term ends next year. They are Yonov Frederick Agah of Nigeria, Karl Brauner of Germany, Alan Wolff of the United States and Yi Xiaozhun of China.
