Why EU kept quiet with Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan – by Jacek Wlosowicz, MEP

The European Union and its leaders have had a long standing political relationship with Pakistan, but after Osama Bin Laden, who was the world’s greatest terrorist, died, the entire world was in shock, and it was not because he was killed by a group of U.S Navy men, but because he was found in a city located in the midst of Pakistan. Moreover, even the military in Pakistan knew that Osama Bin Laden was in Pakistan, and they denied all accusations which were made soon after his death. Pakistan has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, but the main one has been in relation to terrorism and their dual stance regarding this. On one hand Pakistan denies all claims made in connection to their terrorist links, and on the other they have been found guilty in supporting the world’s greatest terrorist and his organization.

The European Union has been accused of keeping quiet about Osama being found in Pakistan, and since they have had a very close tie with Pakistan, various government officials across the globe feel that they would have known something about Osama being present throughout Pakistan, till the time of his death. The European Union and its leaders however deny this, and have on several accounts expressed their satisfaction and relief on knowing that the world is a slightly safer place now with Osama Bin Laden being dead.

In an article published by Global Post, the European Parliament president Jerzy Buzek said “We have woken up in a more secure world”. Alongside, the counter terrorism co-ordinator at the European Union headquarters said that “”Maybe the risk increases in the short term because one may expect a retaliation operation.” The entire European Union breathed a sigh of relief and felt happy after Osama Bin Laden was declared dead by the U.S Navy Seals.

The way in which however America chose to kill Osama Bin Laden was contrary to how the EU views death penalty. EU however expressed that they are no longer against targeting criminals and punishing them with death penalty.

But when all the other countries including America and India targeted Pakistan and raised their questions regarding Osama Bin Laden’s hiding, the EU had little or nothing to say about that, and avoided the topic altogether. This in turn raised more concerns regarding the European Union’s stand about counter terrorism and whether they knew all along about Osama’s hide out in Pakistan, or whether they were just trying to cover up Pakistan’s ignorant and careless state of affairs.

Europe’s stance

Several European journalists and government officials have spoken candidly on Osama Bin Laden’s death and have characterized the fact that the European nations do not perhaps understand the sentiments behind the happiness of Osama bin Laden’s death, the way it is for Americans.  An article published by the New York Times it said “”Nine-eleven happened there, not here. Europeans don’t understand why people would rejoice at ground zero, while it seems relatively easy to understand that in the United States”.

The only questions that circulated in the European Union were whether the killing of Osama was legal and whether the prosecution procedure was in line with the law or not. What the EU was afraid of in actual fact was whether the killing of Osama was going to lead to more terrorist trouble, since killing Osama was not necessarily the death of Al Qaeda or the Mujahedeen. EU officials believed that sooner or later the Al Qaeda would strike back and retaliate in response to Osama’s death, and that would further antagonize the anti-American feeling that exists within the Muslim community across the world.

Several places in Europe went on a high alert post Osama Bin Laden’s death as they were fearful of terrorist attacks and explosions. Another reason for why Europe went on full alert was because Osama had in a leaked tape revealed that he had planned to attack Britain, France and Germany in the same manner that Mumbai was attacked in the year 2011.

While some theories may lead to suspicion of whether EU knew about Pakistan’s unsolicited protection towards Osama Bin Laden, there are some contradictory facts to this as well. The only conclusion that one can derive through the numerous reports is that EU only questioned America’s method of execution, while they did not have a problem with Osama’s death.
