WFP announces the suspension of evacuation flights in Mozambique

The World Food Program has announced that it was temporarily suspending the evacuation flights in Mozambique on account of the growing insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province.

“WFP is concerned about the increasing violence in Cabo Delgado province which is driving increased displacement of populations and leading to a rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the region,” the representative of WFP remarked.

On March 24, armed groups attacked Palma, a port city of 75,000 inhabitants, killing dozens of civilians, police and soldiers. The carefully prepared raid, launched just a few kilometers from the French group Total’s mega-gas project, on the Afungi peninsula, has been claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group.
