In a move to scale up the testing capacity, Austria’s capital Vienna has introduced a new way to test for COVID-19.
In this new way, the courier delivers the kits at the doorstep of the suspected COVID-19 cases, steps back, maintains a safe distance as they gargle the saline solution and finally takes the packaged test with them to be evaluated at a laboratory.
For this purpose, the couriers have been imparted training by health professionals on how long and deep to gargle but do not require any medical expertise. This drive will replace the old swab samples that could only be handled by the medical professionals.
These couriers work using an app, similar to the food delivery riders and are not mandated to wear protective gear while they wait to collect the sample but are required to maintain a safe distance and keep their mouth and nose covered.
