UNCTAD’s Ministerial Conference to be Opened by António Guterres

On 4 October 2021, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will open the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD15) in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The conference, organised by the Barbados government, will take place in a virtual format until 7 October, with events taking place in Barbados, Geneva, and throughout the world under the subject “From Inequality and Vulnerability to Prosperity for All.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados, and Ms. Grynspan, among others, will deliver welcome addresses at UNCTAD15’s opening ceremony on 4 October.

Mr. Guterres will deliver a keynote speech on the critical work needed to jumpstart global economic recovery and assist all governments, particularly poor countries, in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Heads of state and government, senior UN officials, leaders of intergovernmental organisations, top trade experts, prominent development principals, and thinkers from around the world will share their perspectives on the solutions needed to forge a more inclusive and sustainable path forward, including the role of trade.

World leaders will discuss global vulnerabilities and inequities, as well as how to establish a more prosperous trade and development path, in the high-level portion of UNCTAD15.

Ministerial round-table discussions on scaling up development financing, altering global and regional value chains, exploiting frontier technologies for shared prosperity, and promoting productive transformation for greater resilience in a post-pandemic world will also be part of the agenda.

COVID-19 will provide an opportunity for UNCTAD’s 195 member States to find new strategies to ensure trade delivers for all and can address the vast unmet trade, financial, investment, and technology needs of developing countries.

UNCTAD’s top decision-making body is the quadrennial UN event. It establishes priorities for the next four years and makes global trade and development policy recommendations.
