UN Special Envoy Christine Schraner Burgener condemns the coup in Myanmar

On February 26, the United Nations Special Envoy Christine Schraner Burgener said before an informal meeting of the UN General Assembly that the situation in Myanmar was worrying as she denounced the coup of February 1 which overthrew a democratically elected government and resulted in military taking full control of the country.

Schraner Burgener strongly condemned the military’s “recent steps” underscored the urgency in helping to lay the foundations of a “pluralistic democracy”, balanced with the complex domestic challenges of the civilian leadership.

“I have tried again and again to explain the complex situation, namely that the army holds the real power”, the UN envoy said. “Genuine democracy requires civilian control over the military”.
