Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Chief on September 10 during an online event, called for additional funds for the world health body’s “ACT Accelerator” program that supports vaccines, treatments and diagnostics against the COVID-19 disease.
The UN Chief called for $35 billion more, including $15 billion in the next three months. “We now need $35 billion more to go from ‘start up’ to ‘scale up’ and impact. There is real urgency in these numbers. Without an infusion of $15 billion over the next three months, beginning immediately, we will lose the window of opportunity,” said Mr. Guterres during the online event.
The additional funds requested include additional funding for health systems, in addition to vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics, said the World Health organisation (WHO), adding further that these exceed the previously published $31.3 billion ACT goal.
