UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has Urged Governments to Maintain their Promises to Provide Health and Sanitation to All

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged governments to maintain their promises to provide health and sanitation to all.

Even though life without a toilet is filthy, dangerous, and inhumane, 3.6 billion people still lack access to safe sanitation, endangering their health, damaging the environment, and impeding economic progress.

It is also possible to die due to a lack of sufficient sanitation. More than 700 children under the age of five die every day as a result of diarrhea caused by contaminated water and sanitation.

World Toilet Day, which has been observed annually on November 19 since 2013, strives to remove taboos and make sanitation for all a worldwide development priority.

Toilets save lives and help advance gender equality and society as a whole. Many countries have improved their health care systems by improving sanitation and ensuring that everyone has access to toilets.

Guterres called for immediate and enormous investment, as well as innovation, throughout the entire “sanitation chain,” from toilets to human waste transportation, collection, and treatment.

It is not only important for people but also for businesses and the environment, to fulfill the essential human right to water and sanitation. Up to five dollars is returned for every dollar invested on toilets and sanitation in terms of reduced medical bills, improved health, greater productivity, education, and job opportunities.

The subject for this year is the importance of toilets. The campaign highlights the fact that toilets and the sanitation systems that support them are underfunded, poorly managed, or abandoned in many areas of the world, with disastrous health, economic, and environmental repercussions, particularly in the poorest and most vulnerable populations.
