UN Reaffirms its Support for Lebanon and its People 

UN Secretary-General António Guterres is of the opinion that elections next year will be critical to a better future for Lebanon. Mr. Guterres expressed his sincere sympathy for the suffering of the people of Lebanon in a video message, emphasizing UN solidarity with the country. 

The UN chief will be visiting the country later this weekend. The Secretary-General’s visit comes at a critical time for Lebanon, which is still reeling from the effects of several obstacles, including political turmoil, a devastated economy, and the deadly explosion at Beirut’s port in August 2020. 

Mr. Guterres recalled that the blast killed more than 200 individuals from more than a dozen nations, including two children of UN staff members. 

Mr. Guterres will meet with a variety of officials and representatives to discuss how the United Nations can best help in the resolution of the situation and the promotion of peace, stability, justice, development, and human rights. He also wishes to have the opportunity to speak with and listen to people from all walks of life. 

Mr. Guterres will also meet with President Michel Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, as well as religious leaders and representatives of civil society. 

The Secretary-General stressed that only from within Lebanon can a lasting solution will be found, that will ensure peace and prosperity for the people in the country.
