A major airbase south of Tripoli has been seized by forces loyal to Libya’s internationally recognized government. The airbase has been in control of the rival forces of General Haftar who have been trying to take over Libya for more than a year.
A top Military Commander said that the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) has complete control of al-Watiya airbase.
Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj said in the evening of May 18, “Today’s victory does not constitute the end of the battle but brings us closer than any time before to the bigger victory, the liberation of all towns and regions and bases.”
The loss of the military airbase comes as a huge setback for Commander Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA).
Calling for relative peace in the region, the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli said that “there is no military solution to the crisis in Libya”.
