U.S. military to withdraw thousands of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan by January 15

Acting Secretary of Defence Christopher Miller on November 17 informed that the U.S. military, by January 15, 2021, will withdraw thousands more troops from both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Reiterating the same, Miller stated, “By January 15, 2021, our forces size in Afghanistan will be 2,500 troops, our forces size in Iraq will also be 2,500 by that same date.” The Pentagon on November 17, announced, “The U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan and Iraq will be at their lowest levels in nearly 20 years of war after Trump pledged to end conflicts abroad.”

As part of the global pullback, US President Donald Trump is likely to withdraw nearly all troops from Somalia as well. Currently there are approximately 4,500 and 3,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, respectively.
