In a stern warning to China in response to arrest warrants issued for six pro-democracy activists, including a citizen from the United States, under its new national security law imposed in Hong Kong, two prominent members of the U.S. Congress on July 31, said that making such a move will not silence those who stand for freedom.
“If Beijing thinks that this effort will silence those who stand for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, it is gravely mistaken: Today we are all Hong Kongers,” read a statement by Congressman Eliot Engel, Chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, and Senator Robert Menendez, the senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The two members of the U.S. Congress are deeply concerned by pro-Beijing authorities’ decision of Hong Kong which is the semi-autonomous territory.
“This action only further undermines the credibility of China as a responsible rule-abiding member of the international community,” it further added.
