In a joint statement on the U.S.-Iraq strategic dialogue issued on Thursday, June 11, the United States and Iraq have affirmed their commitment to remove the number of U.S. troops in Iraq, without giving a timeline.
The joint statement stated that the United States will further discuss with the Iraqi government the current status of its remaining forces in the country, as they “turn their focus towards developing a bilateral security relationship based on strong mutual interests”.
The move comes as the two nations recognised the progress made by them in eliminating the Islamic State threat, allowing the U.S., the world power to continue to reduce its forces in Iraq in coming months. The two sides committed to continue their cooperation on economic and energy grounds, as well as on the political issues.
