Trial for former Ivory Coast PM Guillaume Soro begins

The trial for former Ivory Coast Prime Minister Guillaume Soro has started in the country, Since Soro lives in exile, his trial will be in absentia.

According to the prosecution, the former president of the National Assembly together with his supporters conspired and created a “civil and military insurgency” to overthrow the government during his to Côte d’Ivoire in December 2019, ten months before the presidential electon,

The trial will resume on May 26

On April 29, 2020, Soro was sentenced in absentia to 20 years in prison on charges of embezzling public funds and money laundering.
