Team Europe Announces Partnership with Laos Worth 550 Million Euro

In the framework of Laos’ 9th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (NSEDP), the European Union (EU), Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, working together as Team Europe, committed to contributing an estimated EUR 550 million in support of a green and inclusive economy, human capital development, and good governance.

Dr. Sthabandith Insisienmay, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment, Ina Mariulionyt, European Union Ambassador, European Ambassadors and Heads of Missions from France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, as well as representatives from the Lao Government’s line ministries, Development Partners, and other stakeholders, attended the launch event.

The European Partners agreed to focus the Team Europe Strategy 2021-2025 for Laos on six main cooperation sectors: agriculture and rural development; natural resources and environment; private sector development, trade and tourism; education, including technical vocational education and training; health; and good governance, following a broad consultation process.

The Strategy emphasizes the relevance of Agenda 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals) and Laos’ Green Growth Strategy, both of which Team Europe hopes to contribute to through a particular “Green Initiative” focused on sustainable agriculture value chains and forests.

European partners emphasized their desire to enhance their trading, economic, and investment ties with Laos, with a particular emphasis on quality investment that contributes to inclusive growth and job creation.

These goals are also part of the EU’s regional agenda, which includes a new strategic relationship with Asean and a strategy for Indo-Pacific cooperation that was revealed in September 2021.

All seven European Ambassadors and Mission Heads pledged to collaborate on co-financed projects in order to increase the impact of European partners’ collaboration in Laos.

In the next five years, Team Europe will continue to support Laos in its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and smooth LDC graduation toward reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.

This collaboration honors Lao PDR’s dedication to green and inclusive growth, as well as the active role Lao PDR can play in accomplishing the global goals of poverty reduction, peace, and stability, combating climate change, and protecting our planet for future generations.
