Tanzanian President declares the country coronavirus-free

Among speculations and criticism over the handling of the coronavirus crisis in the country, Tanzania’s President John Magufuli has declared the country “coronavirus-free”.

He ascribes the victory to the prayers by citizens that he believes God has heard. President John Magufuli while addressing the worshippers in a church in the capital, Dodoma, said, “The corona disease has been eliminated thanks to God”.

The World Health Organization (WHO) as well as other international forces have expressed concern over the government’s strategy on the pandemic that has been more theological than medical.

The Tanzania government has stopped publishing data on the number of coronavirus cases in the country and the last available data is dated April 29.

Earlier last week. President Magufuli said that only four patients were receiving treatment in the largest city, Dar es Salaam.

President Magufuli has attracted international criticism over his repeated emphasis on prayers during the pandemic as he said that the health crisis has been exaggerated and urged people to attend services in churches and mosques, saying that prayers “can vanquish” the virus.
