South Sudan’s military warns of retaliation against attacks by militia groups

On August 24, South Sudan’s military warned of retaliation against the attacks by the militia group, the National Salvation Front (NAS) which is led by renegade General Thomas Cirilo.

In a warning to retaliate against the NAS in case of continued attacks on their positions and on civilians, Lul Ruai Koang, military spokesperson said, “South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) reaffirms commitment to the Rome declaration, but reserves the right to respond with deadly force in self-defence and that of civilians and their properties.”

It must be noted that the militia group had opted out of the 2018 revitalized peace deal. NAS refused to sign the revitalized peace deal to bring to an end the more than five years of conflict since its outbreak in December 2013 as it called for renegotiations to bring in the federal system of governance.
