South Africa identifies new variant of Coronavirus causing second wave of infections

Days after the United Kingdom announced to have found a new variant of the Coronavirus driving a second wave of infections, the health minister of South Africa said on December 18 that his country has also identified a new variant of the virus causing surge in cases.

It must be noted that South Africa has recorded the highest number of COVID-19 infections in Africa with cases approaching the 900,000 mark and more than 20,000 related deaths.

Taking it to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize tweeted, “We have convened this public briefing today to announce that a variant of the SARS-COV-2 Virus – currently termed 501.V2 Variant – has been identified by our genomics scientists here in South Africa.”

Adding further, Mkhize tweeted, “The evidence that has been collated, therefore, strongly suggests that the current second wave we are experiencing is being driven by this new variant.”
