Russians open doors to Vladimir Putin staying in power until 2036

By voting overwhelmingly for constitutional changes to allow Vladimir Putin to run again for president twice, Russians opened the door for him staying in power until 2036.

After 98 per cent of ballots had been counted, the official results stated that the former KGB officer, who has Russia’s reigns in his hands for more than two decades as President or Prime Minister, had easily won the right to run for another two six-year terms after the current one comes to an end in 2024. This implied that Putin, 67, could rule the country until the age of 83.

This was the first time when polls in Russia were kept open for a week in order to bolster the turnout without increasing the crowds casting ballots in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.
