Russia deploys 2,000 troops in Nagorno-Karabakh region

Soon after helping to broker a second ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Russia has deployed its 2,000 troops in the disputed land area.

The truce was made after significant advances by Azerbaijani forces, for which the Armenian-backed leader of Nagorno-Karabakh said that these made it impossible for his side to carry on. Celebrated by Azerbaijan, the truce left Armenians bitter with many storming government buildings demanding the Parliament to invalidate the agreement.

For decades, the two sides have been locked in a conflict over the region and there were concerns the hostilities could escalate.
