ROK President Moon Jae-in calls for restoring military hotlines with DPRK

Days after a Fisheries official of the Republic of Korea (ROK) was shot dead by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) soldiers, the President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Moon Jae-in has called for restoring the military hotlines with the DPRK in order to prevent unexpected incidents.

In a meeting with senior secretaries, Moon said that the move would ease communications and future rescue operations between the two as both the sides continue to search for the man’s body.

The President expressed hope that the tragic incident could turn into an opportunity for the two sides to resume dialogue and cooperation between the two.

Meanwhile, the ROK’s top nuclear envoy, Lee Do-hoon is likely to soon hold a meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun in connection with the incident and will also discuss the possibility of resuming humanitarian assistance to the DPRK.
