Over 200,000 refugee children are out of school in Ethiopia, says UNHCR

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, more than 200,000 refugee children are out of school in Ethiopia, said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on September 22.

Reiterating the same, the UN refugee agency said, “The Ethiopian Ministry of Education has initiated consultations with education and health partners on possible reopening of schools during the new academic year. Schools have been closed since March due to COVID-19, leaving over 200,000 refugee children out of school.”

According to the UN refugee agency, Ethiopia, the East African country is one of the countries in Africa that hosts largest number of refugee. It has sheltered about 779,261 registered refugees and asylum seekers as of the beginning of this month, say the agency’s latest figures.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopia Ministry of Education is working with its partners to develop ways and guidelines on mitigating COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring a safe learning environment.
