NATO Allies are leading the charge in developing NATO’s Innovation Fund

Defence Ministers from 17 Allied countries* agreed to oversee the formation of NATO’s first Innovation Fund on Friday, October 22, 2021, during a signing ceremony sponsored by NATO’s Secretary-General.

This global fund will help NATO maintain its technical edge by facilitating a one-billion-euro investment in dual-use technology with potential defence and security applications. It will also allow for more direct and trustworthy collaboration with deep-tech innovators, who would otherwise be unable to build the new solutions critical to the Alliance’s defence.

The Innovation Fund will assist the creation of a protected transatlantic innovation community in collaboration with NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic – or DIANA.

Since its launch at NATO’s Brussels Summit, a number of Allies have expressed interest in hosting the DIANA network’s headquarters, test centres, and accelerator locations in both Europe and North America.

Both programmes are planned to be completely operational by the 2022 NATO Summit in Madrid.
