Mozambique President confirms fighting between security forces and insurgents

After the attack in the town of Macomia in the gas-rich northern region on May 28, Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi said government forces had engaged in extensive fighting against insurgents.

The recent months in Mozambique has witnessed a surge in Islamist insurgency in the province of Cabo Delgado that started back in 2017. Militants with suspected links to Islamic State have stepped up attacks in the country and have briefly seized the strategically important town of Mocimboa da Praia.

President Filipe Nyusi said, “The latest battles fought by the Defence and Security Forces were huge, they were very productive.” Referring to the insurgents, President Filipe Nyusi added, “We have information that top cadres of this force have been killed.”
