Mike Pompeo threatens sanctions over Hong Kong Mass Arrests

Voicing anger over the mass arrests of dozens of Hong Kong democracy figures, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on January 7 threatened to impose sanctions against individuals and organisations involved in the arrests.

“The United States will consider sanctions and other restrictions on any and all individuals and entities involved in executing this assault on the Hong Kong people,” he iterated.

In a late-night statement after a day of political violence in Washington, Mike Pompeo said, “The United States will not stand idly by while the people of Hong Kong suffer under Communist oppression,” adding that the 53 people arrested should be released immediately and unconditionally.

It must be noted that in an escalation of Beijing’s imposition of a tough security law, Hong Kong police held the mass arrest of pro=democratic activists.
