Kenyan official charged with wilfully spreading of COVID-19

The Deputy Governor of the coastal region of Kilifi County, Gideon Saburi, has been accused of wilfully spreading the novel coronavirus by going out in public without taking necessary precautions.

The Mombasa Senior Magistrate’s court accused him of committing the crime between March 6 and 22, an accusation denied by Gideon Saburi. Saburi has been put under remand until April 15 when his application for bail will be heard.

The court chargesheet read, “Gideon Saburi … within Kilifi County … while suffering from an infectious disease, namely COVID-19, wilfully and unlawfully, without taking any precaution, exposed yourself to the public”.

Gideon Saburi has a travel history to Mombasa and Kilifi after landing in Nairobi from Germany.

“You don’t have the right to go infecting other people with this virus just because you are a leader,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta.

His lawyer said the case to be biased and unfair as he thinks Saburi is being persecuted just because of the comments passed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
