Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga sends offering to war-linked Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo

Like Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has sent an offering to the war-linked Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. This would be Suga’s first such offering after taking over the office last month.

His predecessor Sinzo Abe had also regularly sent offerings through an aide on the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War Two (WWII) and during the shrine’s spring and autumn festivals.

Honouring 14 Class-A convicted war criminals among 2.5 million Japanese war dead from WWII, the Shinto shrine is seen by neighbouring countries as a symbol of Japan’s past militarism and has long been a source of diplomatic friction with the neighbours of Japan.
