On December 25, “green growth strategy’ was adopted by Japan. This is anaction plan to achieve Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s October pledge to eliminate carbon emissions by a fixed deadline.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga had said in October that Japan will go carbon-free by 2050. He stated this in his first his first policy speech as the Japanese PM. “The Suga administration will seek to make a virtuous cycle between the economy and the environment,” Suga said in the speech. “We will put all possible efforts into creating a green society.” That includes creating a carbon-free society by 2050.
Suga also highlighted the need to shift away from fossil fuels to counter climate change as an opportunity rather than a burden.
“Global warming measures are no longer obstacles for economic growth, but would lead to industrial and socio-economic reforms and a major growth,” he said. “We need to change our mindset.”
