Iraqi analyst after receiving threats from Iran-backed militias, shot dead

After receiving threats from Iran-backed militias, an Iraqi analyst who was a leading expert on the Islamic State and other armed groups, was gunned down in Baghdad on Monday, July 6. A well-connected security analyst, Al-Hashimi appeared regularly on Iraqi television. The government officials, journalists and resarchers used to seek expertise from al-Hashimi.

A family member of Hisham al-Hashimi, 47, said that gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on al-Hashimi outside his home in the Zeyouneh area of Baghdad. The family member heard five shots fired. Al-Hashimi, who was taken to the hospital was pronounced dead later, said security officials.

Soon after the news was spread quickly, fellow researchers, journalists and others took to the social media to express their condolences. Apart from this, the United Nations has expressed shocked at the assassination and has strongly denounced the “cowardly act”.
