Indian-American doctor and scientist discovers potential strategy to prevent COVID-19 deaths

In a good news and a ray of hope, an Indian-American doctor and scientist has identified a possible treatment to prevent inflammation, lung damage and organ failure in patients that cause COVID-19 deaths.

The research, published online in the journal Cell, came from the lab of Dr. Thirumala-Devi Kanneganti, an Indian-born researcher working at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee. He identified the drugs after discovering that the hyperinflammatory immune response associated with COVID-19 leads to damage of the tissues and multi-organ failure in mice by triggering inflammatory cell death pathways.

Dr Kanneganti, vice chair of the St Jude Department of Immunology, said, “Understanding the pathways and mechanism driving this inflammation is critical to develop effective treatment strategies.”
