Imam Diarra resigns from the Transitional Council in Mali

The formation of Transnational Council in Mali suffered a setback as Imam Oumarou Diarra, a close ally to the influential Imam Mahmoud Dicko, submitted his resignation in a letter to President Bah Ndaw. He made his resignation letter public in which he said that the situation in Mali requires a sincere and inclusive dialogue without preconceptions, “allowing all its sons and daughters together to join hand and meet the current and future challenges together. 

On August 18, 2020, mutinous soldiers arrested Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cissé. President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on the same day, after he was arrested by mutinous soldiers following months of political turmoil in the West African nation.  

Under international pressure, the junta appointed a civilian-led government to lead the country through an 18-month transition period to new elections .
