Hong Kong election disqualification of 12 pro-democracy candidates raises concern

The election disqualification of 12 pro-democracy candidates by Hong Kong has raised serious concerns over whether the genuine political opposition will be tolerated in the city after Beijing has imposed its new security law in the region.

Hong Kong, a special administrative region (SAR) of China has a partially-autonomous political and legal system that also gives some room to a limited form of democracy that has evolved from its days under British colonial rule. This limit and the inability of the government to continue a transition to full democracy has been time and again criticised by the opposition in the city and has also sparked several mass protest movements.

And these limits of democracy within the city’s system, seemed to contract further as the government on July 30, prohibited a dozen of candidates from standing in legislative election and even warned of more disqualifications coming further.
