“Have courage and declare a national ceasefire”: Afghan President to Taliban

During his visit to Doha, Qatar on October 6, where peace talks between Afghanistan government and Taliban negotiators have stalled, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called on the Taliban to “have courage and declare a national ceasefire”.

Since the talks began between the two sides in September, this was Ghani’s first visit to Doha where at the end of his two-day visit delivered a lecture where he said Afghanistan’s long conflict had to be resolved through negotiation, “not under the barrel of the gun”.

The two sides have made a little bit of progress so far with President Ghani saying, “We cannot end 20 years of war in 20 days.” It must be noted that the talks between Afghan government and Taliban that aimed at ending Afghanistan’s 19-year war and are being hosted by the Gulf state, have slowed over disagreements on how to frame a code of conduct to guide the broader talks.
