Globalisation and Culture – Bringing them together (NAM)

Skimming back to the pages of history of every developing nation few decades ago, people used to live with their own authenticity and cultural norms. The concept of globalization was not known back then. The living style was revolving around the same local norms with less growth. Since the day globalization has entered into the lives of the developing nations, the lives of people have somehow got elevated to the global acceptance of ideas and attitudes. Information has began to build the nexus between the countries allowing the exchange of cultural norms and lifestyle along with the solutions to some unfilled gaps. Globalization has promulgated the cultural, economic, social and technical environment by giving a green line to all the countries around the world for a rich diversity in living. Affected by the global concept, Non-Aligned Movement came to analyze the bright and dark side of it for its member states. It has helped its member-nations surface and build a strong interconnectedness along with extensive renovation in the societies.

The advent of technology has collapsed the barriers of different societies and has encouraged the interest of people to peek into every different culture for a broad development of the society. Today people have mish- mashed their religious rituals with other cultures, which has broadened up the minds of people with new ideas and the adoption of different cultures; leading to a mix-veg of lifestyle. Coming at the advantageous point, the universal flow of cultures have given the identity of various developing nation in different industries and cultures. Through the window of tourism, one can see the global flow of distinct religious groups and people taking interest in the tourist destinations for a new ride; leading to the enrichment in the economy and better relations around the world.

NAM has successfully advocated the cultural change of its member states with a sharp surveillance over the trend and has encouraged its members to foster their cultural existence by safeguarding the local culture. In addition, the glocalization in the global market has influenced the attitudes of the people in a different way. This concept was projected in a way of customizing the norms of local cultures by keeping the message by brand intact. In India, various food outlets have opened in the past decade like McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King, KFC etc. The point to be pondered is that the menu in the west serves various non-vegetarian recipes, which are religiously prohibited in some countries like in India, where beef is considered sacred in the Indian culture; so keeping the religious point of view, global openers came out with some customized Indian food keeping the concept same.

This idea was well supported by NAM for other countries as well and it began a revolution everywhere. Since the foreign products are sold at relatively low rates in other countries, it is quite convenient to have the taste of world-renowned food chains that everyone long for. Not only in food sector but also in terms of art and music, the cultural exchange seems very fascinating. People have become habitual of welcoming new ideas and culture which has benefitted the developing nations to come out global with developed ones. Change in the clothing style and the way people are fashioning different ideas has become a common norm everywhere.
The dreary side of the globalization was yet to be configured by the NAM. It came across the detrimental effects of local cultures. With the stream of cultural flow, one thing that many countries have been facing is the domination over the local cultures. Plunged into globalization, the existence of local cultures has been facing many problems economically and politically. With the increasing investment of the foreign countries, the local cultures are being suppressed to various levels making the natives deprived of jobs and pushing the brands more into the lives of people. With the exposure to the foreign culture, local cultures find hard to survive, especially those countries, which are economically backward and cant able to fulfill the basic needs. In the efforts against this, NAM has strictly been working over the foreign policies between the states to minimize the clutter of foreign companies and rather balancing it with local cultures. Citing from all above, the concept of globalization is beneficial to very large extent and can’t be neglected, but somewhere it has inimical effects to the local cultures of developing nations, as they are being carried away with the brands leaving the local development behind. Since NAM has always maintained positive relation with the developed blocs, there is an urgent need of strict policies with the foreign countries and a strong trade-off especially with developing countries. Once the global giant takes the toll over the situation, there would be no originality in the cultures left in the world.
