Global travel and tourism industry to lose 174 million jobs if COVID-19 restrictions remain in place

A leading industry group on October 30 warned that if current restrictions to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic remain in place, the global travel and tourism industry is projected to lose 174 million jobs this year.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has erupted travel this year, with an effective ban on flights from abroad and closing down the hospitality sectors in many countries.

The projection from the World Travel & Tourism Council, while alarming was lower than previously expected, which may be because of a strong recovery in domestic travel in China and rebounds in other nations.

In June this year, the council had warned of shedding 197 million jobs worldwide in the travel sector that many nations are hugely reliant on economically.
