Former Defence Minister of Mexico detained in United States

Former Defence Minister of Mexico, Salvador Cienfuegos, on unknown charges, has been detained at the Los Angeles Airport in the United States, informed Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard in a tweet on October 15.

Cienfuegos’s detention is the highest-ranking former Cabinet official’s arrest since the country’s top security official Genaro Garcia Luna was detained in Texas in 2019. The general had served as secretary of defence under President Enrique Pea Nieto from 2012 to 2018.

Edbard did not say about the charges placed at the arrest but wrote that Mexico’s Consul in Los Angeles would be informing him about the charges and that Cienfuegos had a right to consular assistance.
