Food and Agriculture Organization says to address water shortages immediately

According to a latest report issued by the UN agriculture agency, the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO), more than 3 billion people live in agricultural areas with high levels of water shortages and scarcity.

The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2020, FAO’s flagship report, highlighting the importance of producing more with fewer resources, especially in the agriculture sector, has said that there has been a decline in available freshwater resources, globally, that accounts for more than 20 per cent per person over the past two decades.

The report further stressed on the need for immediate actions ranging from investing in water-harvesting and conservation in rain-fed areas to rehabilitating and modernizing sustainable irrigation systems in irrigated areas and said that actions must be combined with best agronomic practices to address the problem of water scarcity.
