First Female Chief Justice of Kenya formally appointed

Lady Justice Martha Karambu Koome has been officially appointed as the Chief Justice of Kenya. She is the first female to hold this post in the country. 

The announcement was made by the president Uhuru Kenyatta, hours after parliamentary approval 

“In exercise powers conferred by the constitution, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces appoint Martha Karambu Koome to be the chief justice of the republic of Kenya,” Kenyatta’s announcement said. 

Koome won the chief justice position over nine other candidates .
