Evariste Ndayishimiye declared winner of Burundi’s presidential election

Having announced the results of Burundi’s presidential election on Monday, May 25, Burundi’s National Independent Electoral Commission declared Evariste Ndayishimiye as the winner of the election.

In the polls that took place on May 20, Ndayishimiye of the ruling party garnered 69% of the votes, beating seven candidates including the main opposition competitor Agathon Rwasa, who managed to secure 24% of the vote, said the election commission.

Since Ndayishimiye secured more than the 50 per cent required, the country does not require to go to a run-off vote.

The Burundi elections were conducted as the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, with Burundi government not imposing any movement restrictions in the country as it reported 42 infections and one death so far.
