COVID-19 reaches Antarctica, the last continent previously free from the deadly infection

Chile’s military confirmed this week that the Coronavirus has reached Antarctica, the last continent previously free from the deadly infection. The confirmation came as health and army officials scrambled to clear out and quarantine staff.

The armed forced confirmed that at least 36 people had been affected at its Bernardo O’Higgins base, of which 26 are army personnel and 10 are civilian contractors conducting maintenance at the base.

The Chile’s armed forces said “Base personnel are already properly isolated and constantly monitored by health authorities in Magallanes, in Chilean Patagonia,” adding further, “there had so far been no complications.”
