Correctional facility in South Africa sees a surge in COVID-19 positive cases

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the prisoners’ crisis in several countries have been posting significant challenges. The COVID-19 outbreak challenge has augmented for the government of South Africa with enlarging cases of coronavirus positive in its correctional facility.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said the number of infected prisoners at the East London Correctional Centre now stands at 53 with a recent increase in number by 49 in just two days.

Singabakho Nxumalo, DCS Spokesperson informed that about 23 prison officials are also infected at the facility. By far, those been tested positive are undergoing treatment at the correctional centre itself under the surveillance of health care workers. Apart from it the correctional centre was being disinfected.

He added that as a step to address the issue, a list of hospitals where the prisoners could be admitted if needed, has been prepared. He also assured that transport facilities are also at standby in case of emergency.
