Warning that even before the Coronavirus crisis, many were getting too little physical activity, the World Health Organization on November 25 said that the pandemic is no excuse for not getting enough exercise.
The UN health agency, in an update of its physical activity guidelines, stressed that exercise was vital to physical and mental health while serious repercussions can be witnessed due to sedentary behaviour.
The agency’s head of health promotion Ruediger Krech said, “WHO urges everyone to continue to stay active through the Covid-19 pandemic. If we do not remain active, we run the risk of creating another pandemic of ill-health as a result of sedentary behaviour.”
However, there has been no clear statistical data on what impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on physical activity but there is also no denying the fact that lockdown restrictions, gym closures and other measures have clearly forced many people to stay home, disrupting regular activities and exercise routines.
