Coronavirus a special concern for countries with fragile health systems, says WHO

Warning of the repercussions of a potential spread of the novel Coronavirus in the war-torn countries, the World Health Organization representative in the East Mediterranean, on Friday, March 27, said that the emergence of virus in vulnerable countries having fragile health system is a matter of serious concern.

“A country like Syria, ravaged by conflict and displacement, and with a health system already pushed to its limits, will clearly be overburdened by an outbreak of COVID-19, and the impact could be catastrophic,” said WHO East Mediterranean Office Director Ahmed Al Mandhari in a statement issued on Friday, March 27.

On Wednesday, March 25, the number of Coronavirus cases rose to 5 while Libya, a day earlier, recorded its first case of novel Coronavirus. Libya’s ongoing civil war and its fractured health system contribute majorly in weakening country’s potential to fight the global pandemic.
