Controversial Indonesia cleric Rizieq Shihab apologises for rallies that gathered huge crowds

Indonesian cleric Rizieq Shihab has apologised over  recent mass gatherings in Jakarta that flouted the COVID-19 guidelines. He told a virtual forum of clerics on Wednesday (Dec 2) that he had cancelled plans for future gatherings and trips to the districts until the pandemic is over, adding: “I apologise that there was a build-up of people which went out of control… the followers were too enthusiastic.” 

Muhammad Rizieq Shihab, an Indonesian hard-line Islamist scholar and the founder and leader of the Islamist group Islamic Defenders Front Indonesian: Front Pembela Islam, abbreviated as FPI), has returned to Indonesia on November 10 after three years of self-imposed exile in Saudi Arabia.  Since his return, the supporters of FPI have openly mass-gathered on multiple occasions openly flouting the COVID-19 social distancing norms.
