Conservative Homeland Union party wins Lithuania’s election

According to preliminary results from the second round of voting in Lithuania Ingrida Šimonytė  Homeland Union has won the most seats in parliament — 49 of 141, holding on to its lead from the first round on October 11.

Homeland Union leader Ingrida Simonyte said she would immediately begin coalition talks with the country’s two liberal parties, the Liberal Movement, which won 13 seats, and the recently-founded Freedom Party, which won 11 seats.

In a joint statement the leaders of the three parties, which would have a slim majority, said they would begin talks on forming a centre-right coalition led by Simonyte, a former finance minister.

“We are determined to focus our efforts on restoring the trust between the state and the people,” they said.
