Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting postponed amidst COVID-19 outbreak

The Commonwealth Organisation has said that the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting scheduled to take place in the Rwandan capital Kigali in June has been postponed due to COVID-19.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting takes place every two years and the last meeting was held in the United Kingdom in 2018. The statement released by the Commonwealth Organisation’s London-based Secretariat said that the new date for the event would be announced in due course.

General-Secretary Patricia Scotland said, “We must be mindful of the risks large meetings pose to all. The current circumstances require historic decisions.” She has pledged support to all Commonwealth nations comprising 54 countries and 2.4 billion people.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame said, “We look forward to welcoming the Commonwealth family to Kigali for CHOGM once the pandemic has been defeated.”
