Australia’s Victoria city foils nation’s success in containing Coronavirus pandemic

With its aggressive testing and contact tracing techniques, Australia has been among the world’s most successful countries in containing the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus but with one exception.

With some of the nation’s toughest pandemic measures, the south eastern state of Victoria was among the most reluctant to lift its restrictions even when the worst of its outbreak seemed to have passed.

But as most of the country emerges from the Coronavirus-induced restrictions, the virus has resumed spreading at an alarming rate in Victoria’s capital, Melbourne, igniting anger and arguments over who is to be blamed.

“We are in many respects in a more precarious, challenging and potentially tragic position now than we were some months ago,” said Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews, adding that the entire city and some of its surrounds will be shut down again from Wednesday night, July 8.
