AU announces failure of latest round of talks on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

As per the reports, the African Union on January 10 announced the failure of latest talks on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam going on between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia.

Sudanese Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Yasir Abbas said, “We cannot continue with this vicious cycle of circular talks indefinitely given the direct threat posed by the GERD to (Sudan’s) Roseires Dam, the storage capacity of which is less than 10 percent of that of the GERD, if it is filled and operated without agreement or daily exchange of data,” adding further that Sudan cannot continue with the negotiations without an agreement.

Meanwhile, Naledi Pandor, the international relations and cooperation minister of South Africa, current chair of the African Union expressed regret over the failure in the ongoing talks.
