Asia’s second-tier continental competition AFC Cup cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic

In the wake of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Asia’s second-tier continental competition, the AFC Cup in which more minor nations in Asia compete has been cancelled citing the health concerns.

Announcing the same, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) released a statement on September 10 that read, “In view of the logistics in coordinating the five zones of the AFC Cup and completing the Inter Zone matches, the AFC Executive Committee also agreed that the pandemic created complexities which constituted a Force Majeure event and, with sadness, led to the cancellation of the 2020 competition.”

It must be noted that the tournament had previously been suspended in March due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and was estimated to resume in September.

Meanwhile, the AFC has further announced cancellation of the AFC Solidarity Cup saying it will be played in 2024.
