Asia’s first lung transplant surgery performed on COVID-19 survivor in India

In a first, Asia’s first lung transplant surgery has been performed on a COVID-19 survivor, claimed doctors at a private hospital in Chennai that gave him a ray of hope of a better life after the novel Coronavirus severely damaged his lungs.

The doctors have said that the 48-year-old Gurugram-based businessman was fine now and his new lungs were working well. The patient had contracted COVID-19 infection on June 8, following which his lungs were badly affected by Coronavirus-related fibrosis.

“The entire team put their lives at risk for this surgery. Both his lungs are working well now and we have removed ECMO support. His clinical condition is stable,” said Dr KR Balakrishnan, the Chairman and Director of heart and lung transplant programme at the MGM Healthcare.”
